Introduction

Title:

Stealth Fanless Rugged Computing Solution: Empowering Geotechnical Innovation at UC Davis

Company:

Center for Geotechnical Modeling at University of California, Davis

Segment:

Industrial

Client Brief:

The Center for Geotechnical Modeling (CGM) at UC Davis provides users access to world-class geotechnical modeling facilities, including 9-m and 1-m radius centrifuges with shaking tables, to enable major advances in the ability to predict and improve the performance of soil and soil-structure systems affected by earthquake, wave, wind, and storm surge loadings.

Challenge

The Problem:

  • The environment on the centrifuge is harsh.  There is no climate control, so it is cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
  • The air can be dirty as there’s always a 200-mph wind blowing.  The other small PC fans often don’t survive on the centrifuge at even low g levels.
  • Structural & mounting stability with shock and vibration absorption capability because of the mobile nature of application.
  • High Performance & High speed to monitor and host data from hundreds of sensors onboard.

The Need:

  • Powerful Fanless PC (no risk of Fan failures due to dirt accumulation @ 200mph wind blowing)
  • Wide Temperature support (for harsh climate conditions)
  • A Powerful PC that can act as Host system for high-speed DAS (Data Acquisition System) that monitors hundreds of sensors during the test.

How Stealth Helped

The Solution:

  • UC Davis Installed on a computer mounted directly on their 9m radius geotechnical centrifuge, the Stealth system operates within the challenging environment of the centrifuge, enduring extreme temperatures and high-speed winds without compromising performance.
  • Our fanless Stealth PC, housed securely in the blue box at the center of the centrifuge, serves as the host for the high-speed data acquisition system (DAS). This DAS monitors and records data from hundreds of sensors during tests simulating a wide range of scenarios, from earthquakes to tsunamis and landslides.
  • The fanless operation of the Stealth PC has proven crucial for the Center for Geotechnical Modeling. Not only does it ensure the reliability of the system in dusty and challenging conditions, but it also withstands the demanding environment of the centrifuge, where traditional PC fans often fall short.
  • The remote desktop capability provided by the Stealth solution allows UC Davis researchers to access and control the onboard computer during centrifuge tests. This functionality has streamlined their workflow, enabling real-time monitoring and analysis of data, ultimately contributing to more informed decision-making during experiments.

Results

The Outcome:

  • The remote desktop capability provided by the Stealth solution allows UC Davis researchers to access and control the onboard computer during centrifuge tests.
  • The fanless operation of the Stealth PC not only ensured the reliability of the system in dusty and challenging conditions, but it also withstands the demanding environment of the centrifuge, where traditional PC fans often fall short.
  • Our tailored solution has significantly reduced data analysis time for UC Davis, allowing their researchers to focus more on the intricacies of geotechnical modeling rather than wrestling with technical challenges.

Hi Allan- FYI, this unit is replacing a Stealth PC we purchased in 2016.  We have had several of these in our lab over the years.  They’re nice units.

Conclusion

The Summary:

  • In conclusion, the partnership between [Your Company Name] and the Center for Geotechnical Modeling at UC Davis exemplifies the successful synergy of cutting-edge technology and innovative research. The implementation of the Stealth solution has not only met the unique challenges posed by the harsh environment of the geotechnical centrifuge but has also exceeded expectations, elevating the Center’s capabilities in conducting groundbreaking experiments. This collaboration stands as a testament to Stealth’s commitment to delivering tailored solutions that empower researchers to push the boundaries of their fields.
